Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara: Part 1 - Bound

Author’s note: Upon finishing work on ‘Sacred Lies: Blood of a Guardian’, I decided to reward myself with some time off in Tamriel. After spending more hours running around Skyrim with my red-headed, Breton assassin than I could afford, I hit upon the idea of documenting my adventures in a blog style series for my next project. Rather than jump in at such a late stage of the game, I returned to Helgen on the back of a cart filled with Stormcloaks. Thus, the Kay(jiit) Sarah Sara series was born.

Far from home, Khajiit was minding one’s own business when Soldier grabbed this one, said Khajiit steals food. This one was innocent. Soldier did not like Khajiit, did not listen to this one. Imperials thought this one was part of brutish Nord rebellion and sent Khajiit to execution. This one told them Khajiit’s name is Kay Sarah Sara. Soldier joked about this one’s name. Called Khajiit, Kayjiit, but this one’s name was not on Imperial list.

Khajiit thought this one was safe. Imperial did not care and ordered Khajiit to die. That was when this one was saved.

The air was cold, but the sun beat down on Kay as the cart rolled into town, warming her shivering form with its rays. Imperial soldiers and Nord warriors watched as this one was forced to kneel. Khajiit felt Soldier’s foot on this one’s back, pushing Kay’s head to the block. Khajiit was innocent. This one was hungry. Kay only killed a chicken; this one did not know that chicken belonged to Imperials.

Kay is not ashamed to admit that this one began to cry as Khajiit’s head rested on the rough wooden surface of the executioner’s block.

This one’s throat tightened as Kay looked up at the headsman’s axe. That was when this one saw it. The dragon. Descending from the mountains, its black wings cast broad shadows across the square as it crashed down onto the watchtower. Arrows loosed at the monster as it bellowed, knocking Kay and the executioner to the ground. Fire rained from the sky in response to the dragon’s terrifying shout, smashing and burning the town with its elemental fury.

Eyes stinging from the dust and smoke, hands still bound, Khajiit stood and looked around, heart racing. The townspeople were running for cover as Imperials shouted to bring the dragon down. In the chaos, Kay did not know what to do or where to go.

From a nearby tower, the Nord warrior from the cart called out to this one. The Imperial soldiers were not watching, their terrified gazes were fixed on the sky and the black-winged lizard circling above, blasting the town with gouts of fire before swooping towards the walls and plucking a hapless soldier from the parapet. Terror rooted Khajiit to the ground, but this was no time to be idle. Bravery is not about being fearless, it is about acting despite being afraid. This one acted.

Crouching at the door to the tower, Kay watched as the dragon continued to rain down fiery destruction on the town. The few arrows that found their target appeared to make no difference to the dragon’s furious assault. From the tower, this one could see the locked town gates. There would be no escape that way.

‘Up through the tower,’ the Nord instructed.

This one glanced to the stairs, unsure why we would want to climb the tower when the dragon circled above. Kay looked back to the closed gate before following the Nord to a gap in the tower wall where the dragon had struck. Across from the hole was the town inn, its upper rooms exposed where the dragon had blasted away a section of the roof.

‘Jump,’ the Nord instructed. This one did not need to be told twice.

Jumping with one’s hands bound is easy. Landing is more difficult. Rolling with the impact, Khajiit looked back through the acrid, black smoke of the burning inn, but there was no sign of the Nord. This one was not about to wait. Racing to the exit, Kay looked out at the devastation, searching for an escape from this hellscape. All this for a chicken this one did not get to finish eating.

‘Still alive,’ an Imperial called out as Kay crept towards another of the town’s gates. This one’s claws were ready. Khajiit would not be taken prisoner again. ‘Keep close to me.’

This one eyed the Imperial suspiciously as he helped the townsfolk, unsure why he would help a prisoner the Imperials were so eager to execute. Using the distraction provided by the townsfolk, this one decided to run for the gate. Before Kay could take two steps, the dragon descended again, landing on the wall across from Khajiit.

Deciding it was better to face the Imperial than the dragon, this one ran to where the Imperial crouched, away from the dragon’s gaze. Shaking as the dragon roared, Khajiit vowed never to steal again if this one survived. Heaving a sigh of relief as the dragon took flight, Kay followed the Imperial to the keep, trusting that he knew a way out. One could escape the Imperial after escaping the dragon.

As the Imperial ran to the doors of the keep, the Nord from the tower crossed the courtyard, presenting Kay with a dilemma.

‘You, come on,’ the Nord yelled to Khajiit as he ran to a different door.

Khajiit hesitated, not sure who to follow. Before Khajiit could decide, a vast shadow engulfed this one, accompanied by a mighty roar.

As the dragon landed, swiping away an Imperial archer with its tail as its eyes fixed on this one, Kay felt a warm trickle run down her legs.
